If something here reminds you of the Hobbit, you'd be exactly right; Tolkien's tale of greedy dragons & dwarves was largely based around the narrative of the Volsunga saga.
Fáfnir did not start life as a dragon, but rather as one of 5 dwarven brothers. The father of the 5 demands of the gods to be paid wergeld, in compensation for the accidental killing of one of his sons by the god Loki. The gods oblige, but Loki being Loki, sources cursed treasure as the payment.
Driven mad with gold lust, Fáfnir kills his own father & flees with the horde where in time he turns into a large & greedy dragon, bound to jealously guard his treasure, but cursed by it to find only death.
